Traveling Tuesday: West Sixth Brewing Company — Lexington, KY

Today’s Traveling Tuesday is from Hoperative #113, Michael Schuler. It seems appropriate given that lots of people in Lexington are probably still drinking today.

As I spent the past weekend in Lexington, KY cheering on my alma mater in the Final Four I caught a surprise posting on Facebook: West Sixth Brewing Company was open and pouring beers for the first time! I have been following their progress from the beginning and had to make a stop into the brand new taproom before heading back to NKY.

The brewery is located on, you guessed it, W. 6th Street on the north side of downtown in the massive “Bread Box” facility (an old Rainbo Bread factory).

The inside is spacious and comfortable, with rocking chairs at each table and a separate open-air indoor beer garten with picnic benches.

Fermenters at West Sixth Brewing Company

They had 4 beers on tap including their namesake Centennial and Citra-laced IPA that will be canned soon and sent out to distributors in Lexington first with the rest of Kentucky to follow.

I had tastes of all 4 brews and all were solid (including a hefe that tasted very similar to Weihenstephaner’s). The two owners who were working the bar at the time were extremely friendly and indulged all of my questions. When they were unable to properly fill the half-growler I brought with me due to the wrong size fill tube they graciously gave me a free growler filled with IPA. My short time spent here was very pleasant and I will definitely return in the future for more beers (they’re planning on brewing a stout and a double IPA soon). It’s always nice to see new breweries starting up in the state and having one that cans their product is even better. I’m excited to see what the guys at West Sixth do in the near future.

Nice! Have you made it to Country Boy Brewing in Lexington yet?

  2. Michael S says:

We actually stopped by Country Boy that day (they’re across the street from the new Tolly Ho location) but they were closed for some reason. Haven’t made it there yet.
