Traveling Tuesday: Big Woods Brewing Co – Nashville, IN

Brown County, Indiana is often called the “Little Smokies.” If you squint a little you can see the comparison, but that’s not to take anything away from the natural beauty of the place. It’s peaceful and pretty and it’s just a couple of hours from Cincinnati. The little village of Nashville is the heart of Brown County. It’s a funky, artsy place that manages to keep its head (mostly) above kitsch. Carla and I have been going there on and off for years, and one thing we always thought the place needed was a brewpub. Some folks apparently agreed, and started Big Woods Brewing Company.

It was a rainy day when we were there, so we didn’t linger outside. It’s not a huge place, so it can fill up.

The construction is new, but they used reclaimed materials like timbers, paneling and the tin ceiling panels. This picture doesn’t do them justice. The bar at Big Woods Brewing

But what about the beer? It was good. Nothing mind-blowing, but it was solid. Our server told us that they’d been really pushed to keep up with demand because the unusually warm winter and spring brought more people to Nashville than usual. I suspect some of the beer we were having was a bit young. The Mocha Java Stout listed last on the board was easily the best thing there the day we were there. The food is really good, too.

Space is at a premium. so the brewing vessels are nowhere to be seen. Pictures on the wall indicate that the brewhouse is above the bar, which also explains the beer tower coming down from the ceiling. Which is very cool.

The folks at Big Woods Brewing have a really nice thing going. It’s going to be a required stop whenever we’re in the area. I’m especially looking forward to taking advantage of the porch.
