Cincy Beer Bloggers’ Beers at Fifty West’s CannonBLOG – Dec. 12th

One of the first questions we get when someone finds out that we have a beer blog is whether we brew our own beer. But, other than a few home brew kits that Tom tried out, the answer has always been “no”. Until now. Thanks to the generosity of the fine folk at Fifty West Brewing, we were lucky enough to be invited to brew our own beer with the help of Ryan, one of the brewers there. We’re not dumb so we invited our contributors (most of whom are home brewers) to join us and John Lavelle took us up on our offer.

So, the Sunday of Veterans Day weekend, we met up with the bloggers from BeerMumbo, Brew Professor, Love Beer Love Food, Queen City Drinks, Queen City Fresh and WCPO.com/beer on a bright, sunny day to brew. Some of the other bloggers had some amazing brew set-ups (some of them inspired picks on our Beer Gift Guide). Since we don’t home brew, we used Fifty West equipment and learned a lot. We basically came with an idea and one special ingredient. Then, Ryan and John helped us make it a reality.

If you’ve never been to a regular Cannonball at Fifty West, here’s how they work: Six teams (usually internal, bloggers this time) brew six small-batch beers (five gallons). In turn, the culinary staff at the brewpub prepares six experimental dishes to be paired with the beers. Attendees the night of the event get to try all six pairings for $20 and then vote for their favorites. Whoever wins each competition has a full batch of their beer brewed and served at the brewpub.

In order to keep the competition fair, we weren’t allowed to use our blog names in our beer names. We’re really not suppose to reveal which beer is ours either, but… Any way, here are the six beers in alphabetical order.

  • Amour (French Saison)
  • ApriWeiss (Apricot Hefeweizen)
  • Fifty Flipped (Pale Ale)
  • Grandma’s House (Oatmeal Raisin Milk Stout)
  • I Like My Coffee Hoppy (Coffee IPA)
  • Whiskey Morning (American Brown)

CannonBLOG is set for this Thursday (December 12th). Doors open at 4:00 pm and the event starts at 5:00 pm.

Special thanks to John Lavelle and Ryan Blandford for all of their help! Can’t wait to taste our beer!
