A New Place for Better Beer in College Hill is Open Today

We got a tip this morning that Marty’s Hops & Vines on Hamilton Avenue in College Hill is open today.  According to a write-up in the College Hill eNewsLetter the owners are Marty Weldishofer, a former director of College Hill’s Community Development, and his wife Kate.  Mr. Weldishofer explains in the article where the idea came from:

“In my early 20′s I visited England and fell in love with the whole concept of pubs, where everybody knows everybody,” he says. “I wanted to go back and open one.” Marty’s research into the beer and wine industry showed him that the fastest-growing businesses were a combination of a store and a bar or pub. “So 40 years later,” Marty says, “Here I am!”

Needless to say, we’ll be making a trip out to College Hill as soon as we can to try out what sounds like a really great idea. There’s no need to wait for us, though.  Hoperatives who live out towards College Hill (and anyone else who hasn’t asked for a Hoperatives number yet) should get over to Marty’s and then report back.

Support local businesses! Especially when they support better beer!

Went to Marty’s Hops and Vines last night. It was packed. Great atmosphere. Can enter from Hamilton Ave or there is a parking lot behind store and can enter from rear. Good beer selection in bottles. There is even a “beer cave.” Among some good things in bottles, there were two on tap — Stella and Two-Hearted. He may be adding more taps in the future. Not sure. Check it out.

I stopped by this evening kind of on a whim. Felt like a quick drive. This place looks amazing inside & out. Chatted with him for a moment, and he said after the holidays he hopes to have some beer & wine tastings. Nice selection, but not very big. there are however some racks that just have boxes on them right now, so I look forward to going back and finding full shelves. One disappointment though. No local beers. Didn’t see any Barrelhouse, Mt. Carmel, Moerlein, or Sam Adams. I assume in the future though?

I wrote the article for the College Hill eNewsletter. Yes, Marty does plan on a bigger selection in the future. He has two employees who specialize in drinks — one in beer, one in wine — who advised him on the initial selection. He plans on increasing selection based in part on what customers request. (I’ve already requested my favorite local beer!) So look for a bigger selection in coming months. And he plans on more beers on tap as well.

Please do stop by for a visit. Residents here and in surrounding communities are pretty excited to have this beautiful, comfortable new place to hang out, but we welcome everyone else as well!
