Cincinnati Beer Week Collaborative Beer Brew Day!

It’s beginning to look a lot like… Cincinnati Beer Week time! Five Cincinnati area brewers gathered together yesterday at Mt. Carmel Brewing to brew the Cincinnati Beek Week collaborative brew. The beer, called Cincinnati Brewmasters’ American Barleywine, will be available at participating beer stores in mid-January. The local breweries participating in the Cincinnati Beer Week Barleywine project are Mike Carver of Christian Moerlein, Mike Dewey of Mt. Carmel Brewing Company, Mitch Dougherty of Rock Bottom Brewery, Jason Roeper of Rivertown Brewing, Dan Listermann of Listermann Brewing, and Matt Wehmeyer of Red Ear Brewing.

The first ever Cincinnati Beer Week is scheduled for February 2 – 9, 2012. The week is described as “A grassroots movement aiming to educate, inspire and celebrate well-crafted beer in a welcoming environment” and will feature beer events throughout the Cincinnati metro area.

“It’s only been fermenting for two days and we are all as eager as the next guy for the first taste, but I can tell you what to expect in terms of the style and the characteristics we were looking to bring out.

This collaboration brew is the biggest beer that Mt. Carmel has ever made. That’s how barleywines are – they’re huge beers, chock full of malt body. This will be one of those offerings you can cellar – if you’re enjoying it at Cincinnati Beer Week with us you’ll pick up on the fresh hop flavor throughout the beer. Cellaring will allow the hops to mellow bringing out a richer, more elegant mouth feel and finish.

If this beer were brewed centuries ago, there would be armadas of ships spanning the oceans to seek it out. We’ll be able to prove this claim at first taste, which will happen with all the Cincinnati brewers involved at Mt. Carmel Brewing in a few weeks.”

    If they just brewed it yesterday, do they still expect it to be available in stores in mid-January, which is just a couple of weeks away?

  2. We do plan on having this released in mid-January. We’ll post updates on our Facebook page and website when it hits the shelves.

    Especially a barleywine which normally takes months I would think. I’m hoping it works out!

    This may be one that I buy to age a bit. Certainly couldnt hurt. Plus I will try it at beerfest.

    Kevin (and others), as you can see from the quote we just received and added to the post, the idea is definitely for this beer to be cellared.
