Welcome New Readers!

As we announced on Friday, Hoperatives is now part of the Cincinnati.com Blog Network and we’re already starting to see some new readers thanks to that affiliation. If you’re new to Hoperatives, let us give you the nickel tour.

On Mondays (like today), we publish “This Week in Beer” and on Fridays, we publish the “Growlers and Tastings Report”. Most Tuesdays, we have our “Traveling Tuesday” post on a better beer location outside the greater Cincinnati area. The other days are filled with local Cincinnati beer news, beer reviews and posts from our regular contributors John Lavelle, Jared Whalen and Jason Rust aka Puddin’.

You can also find Hoperatives on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/hoperatives and on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/hoperatives. If you use Google calendar, you can add our Hoperatives Cincinnati beer events calendar just by clicking here and then click the button in the bottom right corner to add it to your Google calendar.

If you are a believer in better beer (in Cincinnati and beyond) and you’ll like to make that official, you should be a Hoperative. All you have to do is drop an email message to rollcall@hoperatives.com with your name and location to join our ranks and get your roll call number. You can see the 302 already registered Hoperatives on our Roll Call page.

The best way Hoperatives grows is through the input of our readers. We love hearing your suggestions. Watch for a survey soon on how you had give us even more input!

So welcome! We welcome you and raise a pint of better beer in your honor!

Cheers and here’s to better beer!

Reminder – May Hoperatives Happening on Monday at Arnold’s

Just wanted to remind you that our May Hoperatives Happening is coming up on Monday, May 23rd at 6:00 p.m. As it turns out, we’re going to be able to toast a fond farewell to courtyard’s top because it won’t be removed until next weekend after all. But, that means we’ll be able to be in the courtyard, come rain or shine. And given the weather in Cincinnati lately, always bet on rain. See you Monday!

Kick off summer right and get topless! We are proud to announce that our next Hoperatives Happening will be Monday, May 23rd at 6:00 pm at the Cincinnati landmark that is Arnold’s Bar and Grill. By the night of the Happening, the top will be officially off the courtyard at Arnold’s and we’re crossing our fingers for great weather. This is a great time to stop by and have an Arnold’s 1861 Porter, especially brewed by Christian Moerlein Brewing in order of Arnold’s 150th anniversary this year. Ronda’s going to be whipping up some complimentary appetizers for the event and Chris will have lots of great drafts available that night. If you’ve never been before, a Hoperatives Happening is a gathering of “believers in better beer” where we meet, discover new friends and drink great beer. So kick off summer and get topless at Arnold’s with your fellow Hoperatives!

Beers Named For March Hoperatives Happening Beer Dinner – March 17th

The beers for our March Hoperatives Happening Beer Dinner have been selected and, not surprisingly, we went with all local beers. See below for the information on the beers in bold. Be sure to get your reservations in as soon as possible. If you are waiting for your Hoperatives number, go ahead and make your reservation now and we’ll get you your number as soon as we can. Hope to see lots of you there!

Hoperative Happening LogoAnd now for something completely different.

The March Hoperatives Happening is going to be special. We’ve teamed up with the Summit Restaurant at Cincinnati State’s Midwest Culinary Institute to put on a beer dinner. The date is March 17 — yes, St. Patrick’s Day — and it’ll begin at 6:30 PM. The price of the dinner is $40.00 a person UNLESS you’re a Hoperative. Hoperatives get a $5 discount, so the price is $35 per person for Hoperatives. Tax and gratuity are not included in the price.

If ever there was a reason to e-mail us and get your own Hoperative number (it doesn’t cost anything), this is it.

Chef Sean Kagy has come up with a nice twist on the beer dinner concept. Rather than courses being served in a set order, it’s going to be a “dine-around” format. There will be four stations staffed by culinary students, each serving a dish paired with a different beer. Guests will be able to visit each station as often as they like. We plan to have a “welcome” beer, so there will be a total of five beers served.

Here is the menu with beers:

  1. The “greeting” beer – Mt. Carmel Springtime Ale
  2. Station 1: Beer-Cheese Nachos with assorted toppings – Christian Moerlein Northern Liberties IPA
  3. Station 2: Beer-braised Short Ribs with seasonal accompaniment – Rivertown Dunkel
  4. Station 3: Beer-braised Mussels with seasonal accompaniment – Rivertown Wit (before its release date for 2011!)
  5. Station 4: Assorted Desserts – Rock Bottom Tazza Mia Espresso Porter

What about the beers? We get to pick them, and we haven’t decided yet. We’re open to suggestions, but you’ll need to make them quickly. We need to make sure whatever we pick can be obtained in time. We’ll announce the beers when they’re set.

So here’s a place where you can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with full confidence that there will be no green beer in sight. It also turns out that this will also be the second round of the NCAA basketball tournament. No problem. We’ll have a TV available. The dine-around format is tailor-made for mixing, mingling and popping over to check in on how the games are going.

Reservations for the Beer Dinner at the Summit should be made by calling (513) 569-4980. Make sure you tell them you’re a Hoperative when you make your reservation so you can get the discount. We’ll work with them to verify that. You can check out The Summit’s web site for information about complimentary valet parking. Since this is a special event, reservations cannot be made through OpenTable.
