5:00 pm – UPDATE Oskar Blues Hops & Heifers Debut at Dutch’s
From Facebook:

Join us as we begin a groundbreaking partnership with one of our favorite breweries!
Dutch’s is working with Oskar Blues to be a retail outlet for Black Angus Beef and Berkshire Pork raised at the Hops & Heifers farm.
To celebrate this partnership we’re throwing a grill out with plenty of OB beer and Hops & Heifers Burgers! Farmer Geoffrey Hess will be on hand to answer questions you may have, or to just hang out and have a beer!
Needless to say, we’re stoked about this. Show us you are too, come out for a burger and beer!
More about the farm…
The Oskar Blues Hops and Heifers 50 acre farm has been reborn by Dale Katechis and Geoff Hess in an area just outside of the brewery in Longmont, CO. The farm currently grazes 100% Oskar Blues raised Black Angus cattle that are part of the sustainable model at the Hops & Heifers farm. The foundation for Hops and Heifers is the integration of efficient sustainable agriculture with the values and stewardship of yester year’s family farm. A crucial part of that foundation is the ability to seamlessly integrate the Brewery waste outflows into productive farm inflows. By being dedicated to an all-natural, locally grown approach, we give back to our community freshly crafted, farm raised products. We do this with the same care and passion to product quality that goes into every Oskar Blues Craft Beer. We are committed to recycling, composting, community outreach, and sustainable agricultural education for future generations.
Let’s be good stewards of the land and get back to the values of the Family Farm. When folks used to know who grew their kohlrabi and fed their beef. Grab an Oskar Blues craft beer in a can, kick up your boots & feel good about the fact that you are doing your part to support the culture of sustainable agriculture.

Review: Tap Room 21 Pale Ale

I’ve seen this brand sitting on the shelf at my local Kroger store for quite some time. Having never heard anything about it I figured I’d buy a six pack and see what it was about. The Tap Room 21 website is one page of marketing fluff with no real contact or company information. Doing a little digging it seems that Tap Room 21 is made by City Brewing Company LLC out of Wisconsin. They are a sort of contract brewer so I’m guessing that this is almost like a Kroger Brand “Micro Brew” that is actually brewed on a lager scale and packaged differently and sold around the country. City Brewing also contract brews Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Smirnoff Ice, Monster Energy, Rockstar Energy, and Arizona Tea. So unfortunately it’s not brewed in a small tap room locked away in a remote corner of New York.

Very clear light amber color.  Head had large bubbles that faded quickly with no real lacing on the glass to speak of.

Appearance: 3

Smell is sweet light and fruity maybe a little of an apricot smell.

Smell: 2

Carbonation is good not overly bubbly. Easy to drink

Mouthfeel: 3

Slightly astringent taste. Neither the malt nor the hops overpower the flavor of the beer. Slightly metallic finish.

Hop Malt Balance: 3

Aftertaste:1

I’ve had much better pale ales so this won’t be on my future purchase list (I’d spend a couple more dollars and indulge in some Sierra Nevada or some Bell’s Two Hearted). You can pick up on the attention to detail in really good beers but Tap Room 21 shows strong hints of its mass marketed reason for existence, however if someone handed me one I’d happily drink it. Maybe it’s not better beer in my book but it’s definitely not bad beer.

Overall Impression: 2

Total: 14 out of 20
