Listermann Brewing to Host Starkbier Fest 2013

The same folks who brought you the Cincinnati Craft Beer only Oktoberfest are at it again. Starkbier Fest will be held March 23rd at Listermann Brewing Company in Norwood, Ohio. This first ever event will feature beers from local breweries only. According to the newly re-designed Listermann Brewing web site,

The idea for a Starkbier Festival goes back to the 1700s when the German monks made strong beers for their nutritional values to help them get through fasting during Lent. All of the beers present were 7.5% or higher. Continuing with this tradition, most of the beers present at the Cincy Starkbier Fest will be 7.5% or higher and all will be made right here in Cincinnati.

The breweries taking part in Starkbier Fest are Blank Slate, Fifty West, Christian Morelein, Rock Bottom, Rivertown, Mt. Carmel, Mad Tree, Cellar Dweller, Wiedemann, Quaff Bros, Triple Digit, and Listermann. We hear that some of the breweries are making beers exclusively for this event. (By the way, we should point out that, while Hoperatives is listed as one of the participating breweries, we are not starting a Hoperatives brewery. We leave the beer making to the professionals and concentrate on the beer drinking!)

For more information, go to the Listermann Brewing web site or check out the new Starkbier Fest Facebook page or follow their Twitter account StarkBierCincy.

Like the Oktoberfest held last year, this event will be family friendly, have live music and serve traditional food. More info on the music and food venders will be provided later. The event will start at 9 a.m. with Kegs and Eggs in the tasting room. The ceremonial keg tapping will be held at 10 a.m. We all know how weather in March can be so we took the guessing out of the equation. There will be tents with walls and heaters so the event will go on rain or shine.

We have a new Facebook page, Starkbier Fest, and twitter account, StarkBierCincy, so join the conversation on those for the most up to date information.

For special accommodations or questions, call Listermann’s at 513-731-1130 or email Jason at Jason@listermannbrewing.com

‘Like’ MadTree Brewing and Support Toys for Tots

One of the things that makes me love the Cincinnati beer community is the fact that the brewers that are its backbone are, individually and collectively, some of the finest people you’re ever going to meet. Whenever we go to other cities and talk shop with our counterparts, we always get the sense that there’s some underlying tension among some of their brewers.  A little backbiting, a little sniping. I’m not going to say everybody brewing here is a saint — nobody deserves to have that kind of pressure put on them — but by and large you can pretty much assume that everyone gets along and, besides trying to make great beer, they all want to do good for the place they call home.

That’s why I’m pretty sure MadTree Brewing Company is going to fit right in.

They aren’t even open yet.  They’re installing their brewhouse. They’re busy. And yet, this appears on their Facebook page today:

Beginning today, the MadTree ownership is pledging $62.29 to Toys for Tots for each day that we reach the 1000 Like mark prior to Christmas. So, for instance, if we reach that goal today, we will be giving $1495! We’re only 86 likes away!

All you need to do to help is share this post and tell your friends to like MadTree on Facebook!

Happy Holidays!

[As I write this they’re at 932]

So go ahead, hop on over to their Facebook page [http://facebook.com/madtree] and click that ‘like’ button.

And welcome to the neighborhood, guys.  Can’t wait to try the beer.
