Craft Beer Symposia returns to Teller’s of Hyde Park – 2/9

Teller’s of Hyde Park will be hosting their fourth Craft Beer Symposia on Sunday, February 9th starting at 4:00 pm. We like to call this the beer festival without the lines. You pick out the beers you want to try (usually three at a time maximum) and someone brings them to you. How awesome is that? Fifteen different breweries are participating with a total of thirty beers available to sample. The brewery list so far includes Oskar Blues, Fifty West, North Coast, MadTree, Breckenridge, West Sixth, Blank Slate, Stone, Rhinegeist and Bell’s. A complete list of breweries and their beers will be coming soon. In addition to each brewery bringing two beers, representatives will be participating in question and answer session throughout the event.

Advance tickets are $40 per person (less than the last time Teller’s had the Symposia). The price included an event sampler glass and your samples throughout the event. If you wait to purchase your tickets at the door, the price goes up to $50 per person. You can purchase yours now at Teller’s or call 513-321-4721. There is a limited number of tickets available for this event and Teller’s will be closed to the public during the event.

Cincinnati Beer Week is Less than a Month Away: Start Planning

Cincinnati Beer Week
Cincinnati Beer Week 2014 is less than a month away. This is the third one and from where I’m sitting it  appears to be shaping up as the best one yet. That’s a guess, but I feel pretty good about making it.  Carla and I were on the board in past years, but life got in the way and we made room for some folks who could put in the time it deserves. We run into the organizers out and around, of course, and besides the thousand-yard-stare that always happens this time of year when the event is hurtling down the tracks at them, things look like things are coming together pretty well.

The website for the week is CincinnatiBeerWeek.com. Go ahead and bookmark that now. You know you want to. One of the reasons is because it appears there are still tickets available for the Tap Room Trolley on January 25 & 26.  You can see the post from earlier this week for some specific details about the two-day event, but you really ought to consider giving this a try. If I’m remembering right, Gregg Wilson — now the head brewer at the Moerlein Lager House — came up with this idea.  He’s still pretty involved with organizing it, though it has a lot of moving parts and I know there are a lot of people working together to pull this off. Last year was the first one and it was a one-day, one-shot deal. It was a hit and sold out. MadTree wasn’t open yet. There were some rumblings in the beer community about the brewery that’s now Rhinegeist, and Ei8ght Ball had already been announced. Carla and I helped out the folks at Rivertown handle their stop, and I remember wondering how the heck they were going to pull it off this year with three more breweries to hit. The solution is to divide the tap rooms into two distinct routes and run both routes both days. The idea is that if you want to hit all the tap rooms, you can do one route on Saturday and the other on Sunday. It’s a great solution.

The other reason you want to bookmark the site is because it’s going to be the best place to keep up with the schedule of events. You have to understand that Cincinnati Beer Week is organized by people who volunteer their time. Many of them are in some area of the business, but the stuff they do for Cincinnati Beer Week is extra effort they put in because they believe in it. I just looked at the schedule and I saw events at Teller’s of Hyde Park, Arthur’s Cafe, The Crazy Fox Saloon, and Wild Mike’s Wings . The thing is, there are a bunch of participants listed on the front page that haven’t announced their schedules yet. What’s going to happen is that that schedule is going to explode over the next couple of weeks. If past experience is any guide — and it happened both years we were involved — there’s going to come a point where there will be multiple events every day of the week and the number of events will increase by the hour. If you check the site today, you better check the site tomorrow. I’ll guess the pace of new events will let off some by the first week of February. Until then don’t assume you know what’s happening with Cincinnati Beer Week events unless you’re looking at the schedule right at that moment. We’re going to do what we’ve done in the past: we’ll showcase events for those places that take the time to send us their events. We are not and cannot be the comprehensive source of Cincinnati Beer Week news.  Luckily there is one:  CincinnatiBeerWeek.com.

Cincinnati Beer Week is going to rock.  Start making your plans now.

Tellers Craft Beer Symposia

To Have Hoperatives Happenings Or Not

Back in 2009, we asked you if we throw it, will you come? You resoundingly said, “yes” and we held our first Hoperatives Happenings a month later at Rock Bottom.

Since then, we’ve gathered at Rock Bottom two more times, Dilly Café three times, Arnold’s Bar and Grill twice, Hebron Brew Haus, The Pub at Rookwood Mews, Olives, Vito’s Café, Teller’s of Hyde Park and Nicholson’s. We also did a beer dinner at The Summit and a Burger & Beers event at the Party Source. Our last Hoperatives Happening was this October at Dilly.

The formula was simple: better beer locations provided our registered members with nibbles (the location could define that however they liked) and we bought our own beer. In addition, we all got to meet more believers in better beer. And we scheduled them on nights when the hosting location was likely to not be busy.

However, our numbers started to dwindle. Where we used to have 40 – 50 Hoperatives at a Happening, we began to have more like twenty or maybe just a dozen or so. Because these events take a lot of work to set (both on our part and on the part of the hosting location), we decided to put them on hold for a while.

Having talked it over, we decided to ask all of you what you thought and wanted. So we’re asking. Do you want us to start holding Hoperatives Happenings again? Are there any better beer locations you would suggest as a location? Are there any locations you would like to re-visit? Any other suggestions? We do these events for all of you so we really want your input. If you prefer, we’re also going to be posting a link to this on our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/hoperatives) so you can respond there or you can drop us an email at both @ hoperatives.com.

So, once again, we are asking… If we throw it, will you come?
