For most of our Traveling Tuesday posts, we tell you about better beer locations that we’ve been to and thought you might like to travel to yourself. This week, we’re going to tell you about an event we haven’t had a chance to attend yet ourselves, but hope to make this year.
At last month’s Old Jug Society dinner at the Moerlein Lager House, we had the pleasure of talking with Dan Gates, Executive Director of Ohio Brew Week before the event. In his speech during the beer dinner, Dan shared the history of this celebration of beer.
In its seventh year, the Ohio Brew Week has grown to one of the largest (and longest) events in the area. This year’s Brew Week is a month earlier than past years due to the July dates conflicting with Ohio University’s New Student Orientation. The keynote speaker for 2012 is Cincinnati’s own Greg Hardman of Christian Moerlein, an Ohio University alumnus. The keynote is scheduled for Sunday, June 24th at 8:00 pm at Casa Cantina (6 West State St.).
Several other Cincinnati breweries will also be participating. Mt. Carmel Brewing, Rivertown and Christian Moerlein all have multiple events on the schedule. Other Ohio breweries participating include Elevator, Great Lakes, Jackie O’s, Maumee Bay, Buckeye, Weasel Boy and The Brew Kettle.
Other events include baseball, home brew, barbecue, roller derby, bands and lots & lots of beer dinners, tastings and tappings.
If you are planning to attend, you probably want to plan on going the first weekend. Hotels are pretty booked up for the second weekend. You’re even better off if you take some vacation days and go during the week instead.

[Please note: Although we do have an Old Jug Society membership, we were the guests of Greg Hardman at the dinner that night.]
