Traveling Tuesday: Wedge Brewing Co. — Asheville, NC

If you have never been to Asheville, NC, drop what you are doing, and book your trip now. The city has won been voted number one in the “BeerCity USA poll” (ahead of Portland) for three straight years now, and after extensive research on two different trips this year, I can tell you that the title is well deserved (there is also a plethora of great food, but that is for another post!).

Wedge Brewing Co. is arguably the best brewery in Asheville, both in beer quality and overall vibe. The brewery is a microcosm of the city of Asheville as a whole; a little funky, but genuine and fantastic. If you ask a local which brewery you can’t miss while in town, he or she is most likely to respond the Wedge.

The Wedge is located in the River Arts District, and it shares a warehouse with art studios ranging from glass blowers and ceramic potters to painters. The brewery exudes this creative influence with metal-worked art pieces surrounding the walls and bar stools and paintings hanging in the interior.

The beers are as awesome as the surroundings. We had the Belgian Abbey Ale, Payne’s Pale Ale, and Iron Rail IPA and all three were delicious. I particularly enjoyed the Abbey Ale: it reminded me of a cross between a Belgian Pale Ale and a Dubbel. The IPA was an English interpretation and had excellent balance between the hops and malt. The only food served here are buckets of shelled peanuts, and there is a makeshift beer garden with folding furniture. Go here and have more than one, because this is a true beer drinkers haven!

  1. The Wedge was by far my favorite brewery on our visit to Asheville. I had the third rail IPA. Amazing. Their Russian Imperial Stout with raspberries was also deliciouso!

  2. Nice, they did not have the RIS when I went. I loved Pisgah, Green Man, and Southern Appalachian Brewery, as well. My fiance and I got engagement photos done at Southern Appalachian.
